Description |
Commemorative plate. Off white with a gold border at the outer edge. All other printing on the plate, front and back, is in brown. At the top is "BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH" and just below is "1893-1993". At the bottom is "Ruskin, Nebraska". At the top and slightly to the viewer's left is an image of the original church, a clapboard building with a spire at the center. Below this is an image of the church as of 1993, a brick builiding with a long addition and a spire at the end opposite the sanctuary. On back inside the foot is information about the church. At the top center is "Bethan Lutheran Church / Ruskin, Nebraska / 1893-1993" in bolded brown lettering. To the viewer's right is an outline of a bell and to the right is a cross. Below is a brief paragraph about the history of the church and then a list of all those who had served as pastor through the anniversary. At the bottom center is the plate maker's information. |

This plate originally belonged to Carla Jensen. Carla was born on September 17, 1915, and is still living at the time of this donation. She was born in Nucholls County, Nebraska to parents Jens Peter Petersen and Mette Marie Jensen. Carla's mother Mette, and her future mother-in-law, were born in Denmark and immigrated to the U.S. Her family were all members of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, NE. Carla was baptized there and later married Harley R. Jensen in the same church. Even Harley's parents, Jens Marinus Jensen and Anna Marie Nicholiasen Jensen, were members of Bethany Lutheran. Bethan Congregation organized in December 1893, and built its original church in 1900, located three miles south of Ruskin. Wings were added to the building in 1908, and the bell was cast the same year at Stuckstady Bell Foundry, St. Louis, Missouri. The church broke ground for a new building in June 1963, laid the cornerstone in September of that year, and dedicated the new building in May 1964. Former pastors: N.P. Simonsen 1893-1899 J.P.
