A child's slip, part of a set. The sleeveless, white cotton slip has a high waistline. The entire skirt portion has floral embroidery and cutwork circles. There is a thin piece of fabric between the two straps on the back of the slip. |

This slip, made by the donor's mother Bothilde Christensen, was owned and worn by the donor, Ellen Schmidt. Christensen was Bothilde's maiden name. ------------------------------------------------------------------ FAMILY HISTORY: Ellen's parents were Jens and Jensina Bothilde Christensen Jensen. Jens was born Dec. 14, 1884 in Lille Mølholt, Skaeve, Denmark, the second of three children of Christian Peter Jensen (b. April 9, 1859, d. Oct. 22, 1937) and Kirsten Marie (Jensen) Jensen (b. April 8, 1850, d. June 23, 1895). When Jens was 10, his mother died. Later, in 1900, Christian would marry Kristine Sorensen. Jens served his mandatory military service and then became an apprentice to learn bricklaying. It was around this time (ca. 1905) that he met Bothilde in Bronderslev. In 1910, Jens immigrated to the U.S. He worked around in Iowa between 1918 and 1920, and then settled in Omaha, where he worked as a bricklayer. He and Bothilde corresponded for a total of 14 years. Jens made a return visit to Denmark in 1924, convinced Bothilde to join him in the U.S., and they returned in January of 1925. On April 20, 1925, they drove to Sioux City to marry at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. They settled in Omaha at 2324 N. 50th Avenue, in the house Jens had built. In 1930, they and their new daughter (Ellen) moved to Rodney, Iowa. Jens died April 16, 1973 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Bothilde was born Aug. 22, 1889 in Jerslev, Denmark, to Ludvig Christian Moller Christensen Hansen (b. 1859, d. 1947) and Ane Helene (Nielsen) Christensen (b. 1855, d. 1932). The family moved to Bronderslev by 1896, and her father worked as a bookkeeper in the Municipal Office in town. After confirmation at age 14, Bothilde ("Tilde") began working in private homes taking care of children and doing housework. From 1920 to 1924, she worked at Andelsbageriet in Vraa. This bakery was next to a jewelry store owned and operated by Bothilde's sister (Anna Marie Hansen) and brother-in-law. Bothilde immigrated to the U.S. in 1925 and married Jens. She died Feb. 9, 1982 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. |
