Description |
Napkin. One of five matching napkins (1985.013.038b-f). Part of a set with tablecloth 1985.013.038a, although the tablecloth has a different pattern. Napkin made from a bright red print with a fern and large leaf pattern in white. The pattern borders all four sides and is used in the center of the napkin. Square in shape. The weft and warp threads have been gathered and twisted into fringe, so napkin is bordered on all four sides by fringe. Two sides have white fringe and two sides have red fringe. |

According to the donor, Karen Marie (née Madsen) Petersen, her aunt, W. Jensen, used to place this tablecloth on the table during the Christmas season. Later, the donor used the tablecloth to decorate the table between meals around Christmas as well. Karen Marie (née Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She died in October 1984, at the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, at the age of 95 years, 10 months, and 12 days. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-day Adventist Church near Exira. |
