Description |
One shoe in a pair of brown leather oxford-style men's shoes--this is the proper right shoe. Its mate is 1987.115.005a. The shoe has a slight heel. A straight-edged seam with holes punched denotes the toe cap. The top of the toe is decorated with a perforated, symmetrical pattern, consisting largely of a two curving lines rising from the top of a diamond shape. Each side of the shoe has five grommets for a total of ten grommets. The grommets are painted brown, but there is no shoelace with the shoe. The interior of the shoe is brown suede. The insole and heel cup is leather, and there is a piece of white felt on the insole near the heel. On the proper left side of the interior, "6 D 3662" is printed in large gold letters. There is a maker's mark on the sole of the shoe. The mark appears to be based on a cinched belt. The top part of the belt shape reads "(illegible)MILTON BROWN" and the bottom part of the belt shape reads "SHOE CO." To the viewer's left of the word shoe, there is a shape like a buckle, and between the words "SHOE" and "CO." there is another shape with two dots. Within the circle of the belt is the word "QUALITY". At the bottom of the heel, there are more markings. In the proper center of the heel sole, there is a logo which centers around the figure of a tiger. Above the tiger figure is the word "TIGER", below the tiger is the word "TREAD". There are eight nailheads recessed deep in the sole, and each nailhead is lined with concentric circles. These nailhead holes encircle the tiger logo. Above the tiger logo, the words, TRADE MARK REG." are printed in the shape of a smile, to curve around one of the nailhead holes. Lastly, the number "14" is stamped on both the proper right and proper left corners of the heel. White stitching around perimeter of shoe and around perimeter of sole. |

Provenance |
According to a letter from the donor, her husband's parents, Bill and Bernice Laustsen, assumed ownership of these shoes, along with 20 other pairs of shoes, during a visit to Elk Horn. Apparently, the shoes had been stored for years in the attic of the J.P. Nielsen's Mercantile, and the attic was being cleaned out and the shoes were going to be thrown away. The donor believed the shoes were likely from the early 1900s. Two sets of shoelaces were included in the gift lot. The donor's husband, Russell "Rusty" Laustsen, used to live in Elk Horn on Union Street. His father, William Laustsen, was known as "Bill the Buttermaker." The family moved the West Coast in 1939, when Rusty was 14 years old. |
