Description |
Oil on canvas painting by Hans Skalagard of the ship Frederik VIII, a coal burner. The painting shows the ship at center, moving off to the viewer's right. It has a gray hull, two white upper decks, and two smoke towers. Three flags, the American, the Swedish, and the Danish, are being flown on the ship. People are visible on the decks and the ship's name is painted on the bow. The boat is sailing away from a harbor or port in calm water. The blue sky has white clouds. The artist's signature is in the viewer's lower right corner. The painting is housed in a wood frame with a blue-green paint color. A label on the reverse side reads, "FREDERIK VIII/ 54 ½ Feet Length- First voyage to New York February 1914/11000 Horsepower-Svend Andersen made voyage in her;/departing Copenhagen 2nd June 1927-Arriving Hoboken 13 June./Painting by Hans Skalagard December 1987." |
