There is a white tag on the inside back center at the neckline: "Jersild / DISTINCTIVE SPORTSWEAR / NEENAH, WIS." There is another tag attached to the side of that one that tells what it is made of. Provenance |
This sweater originally belonged to the donor's maternal aunt, Martha Jersild Lundquist. She only wore this sweater on special occasions. Martha was born 7 January 1899, married 29 June 1929, and died 2 September 1990. She bought the sweater in Neenah, Wisconsin. Martha Jersild Lundquist's father, Peter (Peder) Nielsen Jersild, was a Danish immigrant from Aulum, Denmark. Peter was a national salesman for Jersild Knitting Mill. Peter's half-brother, Reverend Jens Jersild, founded the Jersild Company. The Jersild Company was founded in 1885, when a Danish immigrant, the Reverend Jens Jersild, had to rely on his ingenuity to provide for his wife and ten children. Using an old knitting machine and fine craftsmanship he began knitting sweaters in his home. Soon friends and neighbors asked to purchase these finely crafted garments. Before long, Jersild Knit apparel was being worn throughout the community. The growing business soon moved to a quaint converted school house and later a knitting mill was built to fill an ever growing demand. Jersild sweaters were crafted using precision Swiss Machinery. Luxurious, lively yarns are jacquard knit to produce motifs inspired by the heritage of timeless Scandinavian design Carl Jersild III, a great-grandson of the business founder. The legacy continues. In 2002, Bemidji Woolen Mills purchased the Jersild Knitting Mills. Bemidji Woolen Mills and Jersild have been partners in quality for many generations. Out of respect for the Jersild name, Bemidji Woolen Mills will continue the timeless dedication to quality in producing fine quality sweaters. |
