Provenance |
This inkwell belonged to Peter Hellman. It was given to him for exceptional proficiency as a gunner during his service in the Danish Navy. It is an ornamental brass inkwell. There is a xeroxed photograph on file that depicts Peter in Danish Navy uniform at his time of service. Peter Hellman was born Sept. 15, 1888 as Rasmus Peter Hellmann Rasmussen in Mern, Denmark. He officially changed his name in the Mern church records in 1909, at the age of 21, to Rasmus Peter Hellmann, and after immigrating to Peter Hellman. His mother's maiden name was Karen Dirstine Hellmann. Peter's father was a Rasmussen, the naming coming from Peter's grandfather, Rasmus Jensen. Peter served in the Danish Navy from April 11, 1911, to September 27, 1911. Peter served on the ship Peder Skram, named after King Christian II's admiral, Peder Skram, who won a decisive sea battle in 1535 during the siege of Copenhagen. On July 22, 1914, Peter arrived in New York, NY, on the ship Frederick VIII. He went to Virginia, Minnesota where an uncle lived. He later settled in Atlantic, IA and in 1918 was called to service in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After returning from service, Peter established the Atlantic Machine and Auto Company sometine during 1919 with an American partner. On March 6, 1920, Peter married Karen Kirstine Fuglsang. They had three children together. Karen was born March 12, 1896, near the village of Thorsjoj, Denmark. She immigrated to Atlantic, IA on March 4, just before her 18th birthday. She died November 27, 1971. Peter died December 26, 1963 of a heart attack. |
