Description |
Oil on canvas painting of sailing ship at sea which is flying the Danish flag above the stern side. The ship has a white hull with a brown wood trim. It has three large mast poles with white sails on each. The calm sea is shades of blue with a sliver of land visible on the horizon at the viewer's left. A brown barrel shaped object with a red flag attached is located in the water to the viewer's left side of the ship. The image has an artist's mark in the lower viewer's right corner; "M.C.C. '12". It is housed in an ornate brown wood frame. The inside perimeter is raised with similar designs but it is painted a gold color. The canvas is tacked onto a stretcher marked "H.P. Whitmore/Fine Arts/1517 Dodge St. Omaha." |

Provenance |
Oil on canvas painting of a Danish ship sailing in the ocean. It is housed in a wood frame and has the artist's mark "M.C.C. '12". The painting was found in the attic of Mary Christiansen Debel in Blair, Nebraska. It is possible that this individual is the artist of the painting. Mary and her husband Chris had no children. The painting was accessioned on canvas and the frame was added by Annette Andersen of Andersen Framing in Kimballton, Iowa for an exhibition at the museum in 2008. The thank-you letter in the file notes that this was the first oil painting accessioned into the collection at The Danish Immigrant Museum. |
