Description |
A fatigue work shirt issued by the U.S. Army. The shirt is a light olive green. The shirt buttons up the front with a row of six buttons. There are three additional buttons on the inside of the shirt that fasten to piece of material affixed to the panel with the buttonholes. Each sleeve also has a button at the cuff, both breast pockets close with a button, and there are two buttons on the back of the collar. All the buttons are decorated with 13 stars surrounded by a ridged border. Above the proper right breast pocket is a piece of red material that has "CLAUSEN" sewn in white thread, and above the proper left breast pocket is a piece of black material that has "U.S. ARMY" sewn in yellow thread. At one time there were chevron-shaped patches sewn onto both sleeves that have since been removed. The jacket has a short collar. Under the collar on the inside is a small white tag that reads "38R". |

Provenance |
These materials belonged to the donor. Hans Jorgen Clausen emigrated from Vejstrup, Denmark to the U.S. in May of 1953, travelling by ship and then Greyhound bus to Great Falls, Montana. He was active service in the U.S. Army from July 1954 through June 1956, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany after doing basic training and aircraft mechanics training. Following his military service, Hans was a farm hand, and then a student at Grandview University (then College) in Des Moines, Iowa from 1956 to 1958. From there he attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obipo, California, studying BSME mechanical engineering. ____________ This object was featured in the exhibit "Denmark - America's Smallest and Biggest Ally" which ran from September 2017 to September 2018. |
