Provenance |
This pipe belonged to the donor's great grandfather Niels Jorgensen and commemorated his Danish military service. It was brought to the U.S. around 1891 when he immigrated, settling in Ogdensburg, Wisconsin. Niels' son was Herman M. Johnson (b. Sept. 29, 1886) and Herman's son Paul H. Johnson (Susan's father) was born April 4, 1918. Paul moved to Colorado in the 1940s. The last name was originally Jorgensen, but was changed to Johnson after arriving in the U.S. Military service in Denmark is compulsory for men. The age for being added to the military rosters changed over the years, but by the late 1800s, it was custom that men were admitted when they turned 18, came to the session as a 20 year old, and completed mandatory service by age 22. It is likely that Niels Jorgensen served his time in the military before immigrating. |
