Description |
Needlework picture depicting The Little Mermaid statue that is located in the Copenhagen Harbor in Denmark. The design of the picture is from an embroidery kit which was mass produced. It shows the statue in the foreground to the viewer's right of center. The statue is facing to the viewer's left, towards an oncoming ship. Tan, brown, and green pieces of yarn compose the coloration of the statue. The ship to the viewer's left of center is brown and red in color with numerous masts and fishing lines. It is crashing through a wave with white spray and foam splashing back into the water. Pink, white, and tan yarn strands bring colorful clouds to the sky. The cloth backing is light blue in the sky and dark blue in the water. No maker's mark is present on the artifact. The needlework is housed in a wide wood frame with a raised and rounded internal perimeter. The wood is painted brown and black. There is a cream cloth covered separator between the needlework and the frame, around the internal perimeter. On the reverse side is a blue wax seal and a handwritten label that reads, "FRAMed By/Adam's Ribat/Crafts/Incredible/Rainie Village, Kansas". It is dated 1978. The label is located in the proper right lower corner. A typed essay is adhered to the center of the reverse side and is entitled "Memories of Danish Immigrants Martha and Chris Larsen of Clear Lake, Iowa". |

Provenance |
The needlework depicts an image of The Little Mermaid statue, located in Copenhagen Harbor, with a ship in the distance. It was completed in the 1970s by donor Trish Zara, the granddaughter of Danish immigrants Martha (Salling) and Chris Larsen. Martha and Chris immigrated to the United States in 1913. The donor writes, "I know it must have been very sad to leave their families behind. The vision of two young people in love, sailing for America, forever away from their homeland, inspired me to make the 'Mermaid' stitchery. How brave they were to embark on such an adventure!" |
