Description |
Large needlework entitled "E PLURIBUS UNUM/DENMARK". The whole needlepoint is on a dark olive green cloth with the title at top center. Below the title is a large crown image, with a red exterior around the gold metal frame, a cross at top, gems around the bottom band, and a pink colored lining. Under the crown is a crest that includes a Danish Royal Coat of Arms. Two men with leafed undergarments and wreaths on their heads are on either side of the crest and silver chains holding elephant motifs dangle below. Flanking either side of the crest are two flags, one Danish and one American. The Danish flag is in front on the viewer's right and the American flag is in front on the viewer's left. The needlework is housed under glass in a wood frame. The front face of the frame is painted cream and silver and the external edges are painted black. Acrylic spacers are present inside the frame. A paper entitled "Dr. Thomas Lowe" is adhered on the dust cover but it is copied in the accession file. |

Provenance |
Large needlework entitled "E PLURIBUS UNUM/DENMARK". The artifact belonged to Dr. Thomas Lowe. According to the accession file, "He was born November 8, 1858 at LaChute, Quebec, Canada, and was named for his uncle, Thomas Gilchrist, a British soldier who had just died of cholera in the Crimean War. Thomas Lowe came with his parents, James and Wilhelmina Elizabeth Schlaberg Lowe, to Bremer County, Iowa, in 1868." "...He attended the Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, where he graduated in 1885 at age 26. He began medical practice first in Hadley, Minnesota, and then in Slaytoh, Minnesota, until in 1904 he settled in Pipestone, Minnesota where he remained a practicing physician for more than thirty years." The information notes that Dr. Lowe was not of Danish origin but had many Danish patients as a "frontier doctor" in Minnesota. |
