Description |
Scabbard for ceremonial sword. Long, thin, flattened tubular shape. The opening is oblong and capped in a brass sleeve. That sleeve is 3 3/4" long and has a looped rope design on both sides and a brass ring attached at the bottom side. Another brass sleeve is found about 6 1/4" down the black leather casing. This brass portion also has a looped rope design and brass ring attached at the bottom. After another black leather section, the tip end of the scabbard is also brass and has a dragon-like figure wrapped around the end. The brass loops attach to the belt found in 2012.013.001. |

This decorative sword and its accompanying scabbard and bag belonged to Andrew (Anders) Patterson, the donor's paternal great grandfather. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWI. Andrew was born Nov. 13, 1861 in Norre Vedby, Denmark to parents Peder Nicolaisen (b. ca. 1810, d. Nov. 16, 1874) and Maren Kirstine Rasmusdatter (b. March 8, 1823, d. Feb. 13, 1906). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1876 and became a U.S. citizen in 1892. On Oct. 22, 1893, he married Katarina Detjen (b. April 29, 1873 in Germany, imm. 1888, d. April 7, 1943) in Jersey City, NJ. She had emigrated from Elsdorf, Germany and the two met in the U.S. Andrew and Katharina had four children: Henry Andrew, Andrew, Walter Edward, and Rene Edwin. He died January 31, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a sea farer and joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and sailed for his career. During the First World War, Andrew was captain of the U.S. Navy freighter "Englewood." He retired as a Lt. Commander. Andrew's son Henry Andrew married Leona Wellenkamp and they had two sons: Henry D. and Albert. Henry D. later married Clair Zieger and they had two sons: Richard A. (the donor) and Thomas E. Richard later married Marion Fellows, and they have two children: son Daniel Henry and daughter Nancy Elizabeth.
