Description |
Pillow sham. One in a matching pair with pillow sham 1985.013.046b. This pair of pillow shams would be laid across the tops of pillows. Large square white cotton pillow sham bordered on all four sides with 2.5-inch-wide purchased cotton lace. Red chain stitch embroidery features leaves in each corner, an aquatic plant along the center of the bottom edge, three swans (one in the center of each of the three other edges), and a crane in the center of the sham. |

Donor Karen Marie (née Madsen) Petersen made this pair of pillow shams. She would lay them on top of pillows. Marie Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen, and died at the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 10 months, and 12 days. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-day Adventist Church near Exira. |
