Danish Brotherhood Heartland District Danish Brotherhood in America award rug banner Super Lodge DBIA DB Iowa Minnesota bag |
Provenance |
The bag was used to hold a banner award. (1995.189.001). This banner award began in 1977 as a way to honor the "best" Danish Brotherhood lodge in the Heartland District. A letter below from previous District President Harvey Andersen and Secretary Deloris Ross describes the story behind the banner as well as lists winning lodges. "HEARTLAND DISTRICT, DANISH BROTHERHOOD in AMERICA, SUPER LODGE RUG/BANNER AWARD. In 1976-1977, LaForrest B. (John) Sherman and Erik Sorensen, both members of Danish Brotherhood Lodge #15, located in Des Moines, Iowa, were a committee of 2 who wanted to start some sort of award program. They went to a shop in Merle Hay Plaza in Des Moines for this idea and suggestions. The purpose of this award program was to help stimulate interest and activities in helping to preserve and perpetuate the danish heritage and culture. This was a point system for determining each year's winner-- therefore, creating a competition for each lodge to strive to be the "BEST" for a particular year. At the September 1995 district convention, held in Des Moines, Iowa, it was a recommendation from the District Board of Officers, that this Super Lodge Rug/Banner Award be retired. It seemed only fitting that it got its origin in Des Moines, that it be "retired" in Des Moines - 18 years later. [omitted paragraph, see paper file for full letter] On September 3 1995, the District Board of Officers recommended that his prestigious Super Lodge Rug/Banner Award be given to the Danish Immigrant Museum at Elk Horn, Iowa, for preservation, along with its history and its winners. I'm sure, after 18 years, if this rug/banner could speak, it would certainly have many happy tales to tell, both in Danish and in English".
