Bodice. Part of a two-piece dress (1985.013.051a,b). Long-sleeved bodice made from ivory silk that has large, widely-spaced ivory polka dots woven into the fabric. Ivory lace inserts on proper front--lace for the high collar, a square piece of lace directly below the collar, and two long lace inserts that run vertically down to the waist. Many narrow pleats or tucks at shoulders and below the square piece of lace. Two lace inserts and more narrow pleats at each sleeve. All the lace inserts have the same geometric floral design. Narrow white lace trim at collar and sleeve cuffs. Material gathered at waist, creating a bulge at proper front hem. Short peplum, slightly longer in proper front than proper back. Opening at proper back from collar to waist. The collar is secured by three metal hook-and-eye closures. Below that there are eight more hook-and-eye closures (top hook missing). Narrow pleats run over the shoulders and down to the waist, creating a V-shape. Part of two-piece dress. The blouse has inserts of lace in back plus tucks, and lace collar. Hook and eyes down the front. Ivory silk with large dots woven in fabric. |

Provenance |
The donor, Karen Marie Madsen Petersen, wore this two-piece dress to her maternal grandparents' (Grandma and Grandpa Wolf) golden wedding anniversary. Karen's mother, Christine Wolf Madsen, helped her make the dress. Karen Marie Madsen Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She was born in Audubon County, Iowa on 15 December 1888 and died on 27 October 1984 in the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Exira. |
