Description |
A wooden carving of a standing woman. The figure is wearing a light brown dress with a heavy black shawl. Her hands are hidden underneath a tan apron that is draped over her arms in the front. The women has a long face with high cheek bones. Her nose is rounded on the end and turned upward. The color of her eyes are light brownish in color with white highlights. Her hair is painted the same black color as the shawl. The hair is up in a cone shaped bun at the back of her head. On the back of the figurine, there is a bow. Two black shoes peek out from beneath the hem of her skirt. The bottom of the figurine has a stamp that reads "G.D. / DANMARK." |

The wooden figure was carved by an 80 year old man, and he sold them on Sundays in Løkken, Denmark. The donor bought them in 1967. Marie's mother was Christine Petersen. She immigrated in 1908 to marry. She and Marie went back to Denmark for 11 months in 1915 and Marie learned Danish. They returned to the U.S. when rumors of the threat of WWI began to circulate. After WWII, Christine visited Denmark several times. She passed on Oct. 20, 1988. She divorced her husband in 1924. |
