Description |
WWI medal. Divided into two sections. The upper ribbon section is made of a ribbed satin ribbon with three vertical bars of color - red, white, and blue (viewer's left to right). On back is a pin clasp. Below hangs a bronze six pointed star-like design behind a circular overlay. Each of the star "arms" are ridged. Around the overlay is in raised lettering "UNITED STATES FORCES 1917-1918". At the center is an eagle with outstretched wings, a shiled on its chest, and stars above its head. In its left talon are arrows and in its right a branch. On back is a star at the top and bottom, and the following, all raised: "PRESENTED / BY THE PEOPLE OF / SHELBY COUNTY, IOWA. / IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF / PATRIOTIC SERVICES / IN THE / WORLD WAR". Something else is below, likely a maker, but it is too tiny to be legible. The two sections are connected by a small brass ring. |

Provenance |
This medal was presented to Jens P. Andersen, father of the donor. Jens P. Andersen is on the museum's Wall of Honor. He was born May 17, 1893, in Jutland, Denmark to Niels and Ane Margrethe Steiner Andersen. He married Hilda Lorena Hansen on Dec. 10, 1919, in Atlantic, IA, and died March 7, 1970, in Harlan, IA. He is buried in Elk Horn, IA. This is not a military or federally issued medal. Many communities around the country developed medals and other means of recognition for their servicemen. This was apparently the method Shelby County, Iowa chose. |
