Provenance |
This crazy quilt was farewell gift to the donor's mother, Gerda Dorthea Christensen Duus, from the Danish Ladies Aid in Badger/Hetland, South Dakota. She received it in the summer of 1941. Gerda's husband, Pastor Vagn H. Duus, had accepted a call to serve in Danevang, Texas, so the Danish Ladies Aid in Badger/Hetland, South Dakota, made this quilt sometime in late 1940 or early 1941. Most of women in the Ladies Aid had been born in Denmark in the district called Vendsyssel. According to the donor, Sophie Holmgard, Anna Stephensen, Mary Dam Valborg Sand, Emma Nielsen, Marie Albertsen, Dagmar Jensen, Mette Andersen, Olga Larsen and Anna Andersen all made this crazy quilt. The donor's father, Pastor Vagn H. Duus, had came to Badger/Hetland in the summer of 1939, after graduating from the Grand View Seminary. This was his first call, and for both he and his wife Gerda it was in many ways the most memorable. The donor, Sybil Duss Needham, was only one year old when the family arrived in Badger/Hetland. The donor's mother used to place this quilt upon donor Sybil's bed on cold winter nights. Gerda Dorthea Christensen Duus gave the quilt to donor Sybil circa 1987, when she began dispersing household possessions. |
