Olga Olsen and her sisters, Ruth and Vera, were long-time residents of Watertown. Their father, Hans Olsen, came to South Dakota in 1899 and was involved with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for more than 50 years. He was the foreman for the local office. The residence at 305 3rd street is the sole residence of the Hans Olsen family since their arrival to Watertown. Hans Olsen was born August 21, 1862 at Nestved, Denmark. He came to the U.S. in June 1880 at the age of 18. He retired from the railroad in 1932. He married Augusta Erikson (of Swedish descent) at Ashland, Wisconsin on April 8, 1892. Olga's mother Augusta was born in Falkenberg, Sweden on January 29, 1864. She came to the U.S. in 1888 at the age of 24 years. She died July 3, 1945. Olga Sophie Olsen was born June 9, 1895, at Tracy, Minnesota. She graduated from high school at Watertown, South Dakota, and from a two-year advanced course at Mankato, Minnesota State University. She received a Bachelor of Science from Northern State College at Aberdeen and a Master of Science in education from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. She taught for 49 years, 46 of them in Cleveland, Ohio. She retired in 1965. She was a former member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Cleveland and the Altar Guild of Emmanuel Church; Northeastern Ohio Teacher's Association, Shaker Heights, Ohio; Republican Women's Club; and a charter member of the American Association of University Women. She was, at the time of her death in 1987, a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Margaret's Guild. Olga did not have children. |
