Description |
An apron. The waist apron is made from white cotton. There is trim along the center of the waistband and the three other edges that consists of a printed geometric design, grey in color. There is a tie extending off each end of the waist. The ties may have had a button closure at one time. The bottom corners are rounded. The three sides have an extra piece of fabric sewn along the edges that is gathered in such a way to create ruffles. |

The apron was most likely made by the donor, Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen. The apron is listed on handwritten notes in the accession file, but there is no accompanying provenance. ------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY NOTES: Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She was born in Audubon County, Iowa on 15 December 1888 and died on 27 October 1984 in the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Exira. |
