Description |
Belt. Exterior surface made from a black silk ribbon with purple edges and machine-made floral embroidery. Floral embroidery done in light purple, dark purple, green and white. Attached to the proper front of the proper center of the belt is a large bow made of the same ribbon. Bow has long trailing tail ends. The interior of the belt is lined with a gray fabric (cotton?). The ends of the belt gently taper, and attach to a strip of black and white elastic. The large bow is actually sewn to this elastic. One metal hook-and-eye closure to fasten the belt. |

Provenance |
This belt may be part of an old folk costume from the Amager region that was used circa 1800 to 1820. The donor's mother brought some old costume parts when she immigrated. The donor's mother, Karoline Jorgensen Blaes, immigrated in 1906. The donor's father had immigrated the year before. Her mother taught sewing and made over old clothing for the family, which, the donor speculates, is why the old costume parts came over from Denmark. |
