Description |
Ankle-length clerical robe. Black wool with white cuffs made from linen handkerchief sewn into sleeves. Proper front of the robe was originally decorated with 17 wooden buttons covered with silk thread (only 13 buttons remain). These buttons have an x-shaped design on the surface. Three smaller versions of these buttons decorate each sleeve cuff. The proper front opening would have been secured by eight interior buttons (only seven remain). These interior buttons are obscured from view by the flap on the proper front with the decorative wooden buttons. The interior buttons do not match. The robe has a built-in black stole. The proper back of the collar is lined with a cardboard-like material to keep the collar lifted and curved, and this cardboard-like material extends down along each side of the proper front to about the waist level as a 2-inch wide flap of stiff, heavy material. Below the waist level, the built-in stole is not lined with material. The collar is deliberately lifted and curved so that additional stoles can be fitted around the neck and worn with the robe. The interior of the robe is lined with a black satin. On each side of the robe, underneath the flap with the built-in stole, there is one slit and a pocket. Each slit probably allows access to pockets in lay clothes worn underneath the robe. Label at back of the neck area is illegible. Gathered yoke in middle of the back. |
