Description |
Doily. Roughly square in shape. Made from a narrow ribbon that has been folded into symmetrical loops and curves, which are interconnected and held together by stitches. Central design creates a cross shape. Doily has a white sticker which reads: "OSCAR R. PETERSEN / PEACE HAVEN / WALNUT, IA 51577". |

This doily belonged to Danish immigrant Oscar Petersen. It was made by Oscar's father's housekeeper in Denmark and sent to him. Oscar Petersen used this doily in his home in Chicago. Oscar Petersen was born in Vejle, Denmark in 1909. After Mr. Petersen came to the United States he worked on many farms in the Walnut, Iowa area and learned English and accounting. Mr. Petersen then went to work for Green Bay Lumber in Walnut, Iowa as the bookkeeper and cashier, then the dry goods store and the Exchange State Bank in Walnut. During World War II, Mr. Petersen joined the army and earned his citizenship. After the war, he went to Chicago and worked for Price Waterhouse. It was in Chicago that he met and married Mrs. Petersen. Mrs. Petersen was born in the United States and worked as a nurse in Chicago. The Petersens returned to Walnut for their retirement. Mr. Petersen worked until he was seventy. |
