Description |
Military green waist coat. Has four brown plastic buttons up the front and a snap at the bottom. Each cuff has an identical button. The fold-down collar has a brass pin on either lapel - a "U.S." on the proper right and three towers on the proper left. There are two pockets on front, each with a flap at the top. Above the proper left one is a bar with white, red, white, light blue, dark blue, light blue, white, red white on one section and white, red, black, and white on the other. Below, attached to the pocket flap, is a dark silver-colored pin with a cross at the center and a wreath around it. On a bar attached below is "RIFLE". Each shoulder has an epaulet with a silver and white enamel pin at the top, nearest the neck. The pin is a shield shape with three red swords on it and what looks like a flour de lis with red/white/red bars below it in the upper left corner. On the silver ribbon area at the bottom is "ESSAYONS ET FAISONS". The coat has buckles that tighten at the waist, visible on back. Inside the coat, just below the neck, is "J-4889" in handwritten notes and stamps four times. It appeared a fifth time, but that one was crossed out. Also inside are two pockets with no top flaps. Inside the proper right one is sewn a white label with maker and size information on it. |

Provenance |
The U.S. military uniform pieces belonged to the donor's father Arne W. Jorgensen, who later became Assistant Editor of Den Danske Pioneer. He was born April 20, 1928 in Chicago to Danish immigrant parents Henry (born Heinrik Olaf Sophus Jørgensen) and Petrea Jorgensen. He went to Denmark for a time and did an apprenticeship before returning to the U.S. He then served in Korea, where these uniforms were used (1950-1952), and then worked at the Pioneer for about 25 years. Arne's wife, the donor's mother, was Herdis E. (Kigt) Jorgensen (1936-2010). She was a Danish immigrant to the U.S. in the 1950s, became a nanny for a time, and then married Arne in 1967. The two had at least two children, the donor Jimmy and a daughter Debbie. |
