Provenance |
These cloth fragments came from a piece of wool Danish immigrant Andreas Karstensen purchased during his 1914 visit to Denmark. The museum's collection also contains the trunk (1988.074.001) Andreas Karstensen used when he immigrated to the U.S. in 1892. Andreas later used this same trunk for his 1914 visit. Andreas Karstensen was born 3 April 1868 at Otis, near Kolding, Denmark. Nicoline (née Juel) Karstensen was born 23 January 1871 in Slesvigs, Denmark. In 1892, Andreas and Nicoline immigrated to the U.S. They married on 14 February 1893. The couple settled in Atlantic, Iowa. Andreas was a farmer in the U.S., but had studied law and served in the army in Denmark. Andreas died in 1939, and Nicoline died in 1940. Nicoline's mother, Anna Marie (née Carstensen) Juel, was widowed in December of 1892. A few months later, Anna Marie immigrated to the U.S. with five children, arriving on 13 March 1893. |
