Provenance |
This doll buggy lap robe was made for donor Muriel Kruse Connolly by the donor's paternal grandmother, Grandmother Kruse (Adoliphine Kruse). Grandmother Kruse lived in Denmark. Muriel dated it to circa 1923. The donor' s father, Hagbarth Kruse, was born 16 April 1882 in Denmark (possibly in Tred per Knebel). Hagbarth learned the blacksmith trade in Denmark. Hagbarth immigrated to the United States and settled in the state of South Dakota in 1906. He worked as a blacksmith in Lake Preston and later set up his own shop in Arlington. Hagbarth married Bessie Ethel Long on 19 October 1910. Bessie was born in Grant County, Wisconsin, on 25 August 1887. They had two daughters and one son. Hagbarth sold his shop in Arlington in 1926 and moved to De Smet, where he worked as the Kingabury County Sheriff until 1931. He returned to Arlington, running a heating and plumbing business among other jobs before eventually became the town's Chief of Police in 1948. His wife, Bessie, ran a maternity home from their house. Bessie died at the age of 73, and Hagbarth died at the age of 87. They are both buried in Arlington. |
