Description |
Case to a traveling or portable communion set. Wood box with an attached lid, rectangular in shape. Flat sides, top, and bottom. On front is a black metal lock plate with a small knob that moves to open or lock the lid. On the lock plate is "WESTRAY / CINCINNATI OHIO". The two hinges on back are covered by the leather. Inside, the lining of the lid is purple taffeta or satin, and the lining of the box portion is purple velvet. At the outer edge of the latter is a thin gold rope border. There are recesses in the box where the different pieces rest. |

This portable communion set was used by the donor during his ministry in parishes of the United (Danish) Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and Hutchinson, Minnesota. The donor, Edward A. Hansen (born 1917), was a Lutheran pastor, teacher, and bishop from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born in Harlan, Iowa on April 17, 1917, and attended school at Dana College, Trinity Theological Seminary, and graduate studies at three schools. He married Shirley M. Bondo on Oct. 15, 1943, and they had two children. Edward's father was Albert Hansen (b. 1871-d. 1943), a publisher, editor, state legislator, county auditor, mayor, and businessman from Harlan, Iowa. Albert was a state representative in the General Assembly from Shelby county. He was born Dec. 13, 1871 on a farm in Dodge county, Nebraska. On June 17, 1900, Albert married Anna Nelson of Lincoln, Nebraska. Albert's father, and Edward's grandfather, was Jens Hansen (b. 1845-d. 1922), a Danish immigrant, pioneer, homesteader, and farmer in Elk Horn, Iowa.
