Description |
Painting of Frederiksberg Garden which was completed in 1930. It depicts a tan road in the foreground that extends off to the viewer's left. On the left edge is an iron gate that is open. It is connected to a fence that runs to the viewer's right. The main focus of the image is a gold rectangular building with white trim and an orange roof. To the viewer's left of this building is a six-sided gray gazebo or conservatory. The road is lined with bare trees and coniferous trees surround the gold building. In the viewer's lower right corner is the artist mark and date, "1930/EM". The painting is housed by four trim pieces that function as the frame from the front. The pieces are painted a metallic gold. An inscription on the reverse side, top edge, reads, "Einer Mathiesen-Frederiksberg Have." Additional arithmetic equations are on the wood of the stretcher. |

Provenance |
The painting was completed by Einer Mathiesen in 1930. It was sent from Denmark to the donor and her husband, Johannes Bruun. Johannes Paulsen Bruun was born in Denmark in 1902. In 1925, Johannes immigrated alone to the United States in search of employment and opportunity. He settled in Audubon, Iowa, where he first worked as a farmhand and later at a creamery. Johannes married Chrysantha F. Sorensen at an unknown date and they had two children. Johannes died in 1982. |
