Description |
This is the proper right shoe in a pair of black patent leather women's pumps. The front of the shoe is decorated with plain, rectangular silver buckle. Kitten heel. Printed in gold on the black insole of the shoe, are the words "Sears" and "Featherlite." "Sears" is enclosed within a box and printed in simple block letters, whereas "Featherlite" is written in much larger letters in cursive. At the proper back of the interior, near the heel, are the words "FASHION / APPROVED BY / I. MILLER", which are enclosed within a circle with scalloped edges. This is also printed in gold. The interior of the shoe is lined with a grey-brown suede and black fabric. On the proper right side of the interior, printed on the brown suede in purple ink, are a series of words and numbers, none of which are very legible. The only words that can be made out are "BONDED CELLULOSE" and the numbers "8" "7812" "12" / "509G". There is a small, circular, brown pad at the tip of the toe on the sole of the shoe. |

Provenance |
The donor, Ester Carlson, used this pair of shoes as part of a folk costume, catalog number (2005.035.005a-e). Esther wore this folk costume at festivities held by the Scandanavian Club in Columbus, Ohio. The folk costume (2005.035.005a-e) was made by both Thora Andersen Jensen (Esther's mother) and Anna Sophie Andersen (Esther's aunt) for Esther. Both women were from Fyn and had studied embroidery and lacemaking in Denmark. Thora and Anna designed the folk costume from a picture of the traditional dress of the Odense area. The costume was made during Anna's visits to the United States. Anna traveled to the U.S for the first time at the age of 70, in the early 1960s, and then returned three more times. She had taught herself English by the time of her second visit. A brooch (2005.035.004) was also used as part of the folk costume. |
