Provenance |
The paisley shawl originally belonged to the donor's maternal grandmother (name unknown). The donor's mother, Kristine Jacobsen Kirk, brought this shawl over to the U.S. in 1902 when she immigrated. The donor's father was Peter Christensen Kirk (his name was originally Nels Petersen Christensen in Denmark, but he changed it when he immigrated to the U.S.). Peter was born 10 June 1861 in Brathing, Jylland, Denmark. His second wife, Kristine Jacobsen Kirk, was born 25 August 1865 in Aarhus, Jylland, Denmark. In 1902, Peter and Kristine immigrated to the U.S. with their children and Kristine's father, Jacob Bach. Peter had been a farmer in Denmark, and he first farmed near Elk Horn, Iowa. Later Peter operated a hotel and restaurant. He was also a stock buyer and a butcher. Kristine was a homemaker and operated the restaurant in Kimballton Iowa. Peter and Kristine had a total of nine children. All children were born in Denmark, except donor Emma and her sister Clara. |
