Provenance |
The slip is part of a set worn by Helene Lange Christensen for her marriage to Chris L. Christensen in 1932. This piece was worn under the wedding gown. A note in the file indicates the dress and other accessories may have been purchased at Brandeis Department Store in Omaha, Nebraska. There are two wedding photographs (1986.133.011 and 1986.133.012) of the couple that feature Helene in the wedding apparel. -------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY NOTES: Helene Alfreda Lange, daughter of Johannes and Karn Petersen Lange, was born on January 2, 1906 near Elk Horn, Iowa. She and her twin, Herbert Arnold, joined five brothers and two sisters. Helene was baptized on February 4, 1906. She attended rural Elk Horn schools and Elk Horn High School, where she played on the basketball team. She graduated with the Class of 1924. Helene taught in the rural Elk Horn Schools for eight years. On August 17, 1932, she and Chris L. Christensen, also of Elk Horn, were united in marriage at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They farmed on the Christensen family farm near Elk Horn for 36 years before retiring to Elk Horn in 1968. They had one son, Thomas Lange Christensen, born on July 31, 1933. In the 1970s, Chris and Helene enjoyed a trip to Denmark. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1982. On the evening of November 1, 1983, while crossing the street in front of their home in Elk Horn, they were struck by an automobile. Chris died later that evening. Helene, severely injured, spent several months in the Jenny Edmundsen Hospital in Council Bluffs and later was transferred to the Methodist Midtown Rehabilitation Center in Omaha. In March, 1984, she became a resident of the Salem Invalid Home in Elk Horn. She lived there until her death on September 3, 1986, following a heart attack. She had been able to celebrate her eightieth birthday eight months before. Burial was in the Elk Horn Cemetery. |
