Description |
Tablecloth. Made from white damask and rectangular in shape. Damask pattern features a design of numerous long, winding stems and leaves (perhaps water lillies?) along the borders and also in the proper center. A border between the two layers of stems and leaves has several circles with flowers. One corner has the letter "V" embroidered in white satin stitch. Short edges are hemmed. |

Donor Ellen Haumann Nielsen dated this tablecloth to 1915. Ellen brought this tablecloth with her when she immigrated to the United States in 1926. Donor Ellen Haumann Nielsen was the daughter of Hans and Signe Jørgensen. The family home was called Skodborghus, in Vejen, Jylland, Denmark. Ellen was married to William Tronborg Nielsen, another Danish immigrant. William was born in Hoven, Jylland. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1924. The date of William and Ellen's wedding is unknown. In 1929, Ellen's mother, Signe Jørgensen, immigrated to the U.S. to live with her only living child. The family first lived in Little Valley, New York and later moved to the towns of Estherville and Ringsted, Iowa. Signe had been a widow since her husband's death in 1912. Signe Jørgensen died in March 27, 1957. |
