Provenance |
This doily is one of a set of seven pieces that was handmade by Danish immigrant Anna Katherine Lorenzen Terp for her daughter, donor Anna Catherine Terp Barnes. The items were all part of the donor's hope chest. These handmade items were used in the donor's home for 47 years. Anna Katherine deliberately specified what the different pieces should be used for. The four doilies were meant to be used on end tables. Anna Katherine Lorenzen Terp most likely began working on the pieces in the 1940s. She developed breast cancer in 1950 and her pain became particularly acute during the last year or so of her life. During this period she busied herself with particularly difficult needlework patterns to take her mind off her pain. Anna Katherine died on 17 November 1953, and her daughter was married on 29 May 1954. Anna Katherine Lorenzen Terp was born 2 February 1899 in Denmark. Although Anna Katherine attended nursing school in Denmark, she was unable to complete her training when her widowed brother came home from WWI with gas poisoning and needed help caring for his two children. On 15 September 1931, Anna Katherine married Christian Peter Terp. Christian (born 1898 in Denmark) had immigrated to the U.S. in 1929 to attend Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. He worked on a farm while attending college, and returned to Denmark to marry Anna Katherine. Anna Katherine then immigrated with Christian in late 1931, arriving in New York Harbor. Christian worked as a farmer and then a laborer in Chicago, Illinois and Anna Katherine offered bedside care in her own home for poor and elderly Danes through the aid of the Danish Relief Society. Christian and Anna Katherine were also custodians for the Ebeneezer Church in Chicago from approximately 1934-1944. The couple had two children. Anna Katherine died in 1953 and Christian died in 1954. |
