Description |
Large black and white photograph of a confirmation class including Marie Madsen. The class which includes eleven young men dressed in dark suits, white shirts, and ties. There are also sixteen young women dressed in long dresses with their hair pulled up. Some of the girls have bows in their hair. In the middle of the photograph is an older man wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and a bowtie. A watch chain is visible on his vest. He is holding a book, presumably the Bible. The front two rows are sitting while the top row is standing. The photo was taken in front of a backdrop with a false curtain. There is a patterned rug under the group. The print is mounted on a piece of gray mat. In the bottom right corner is a studio mark which reads "Miller's Studio / ELK HORN, IA.". On the back is written "Comfermation in Elk Horn 1906". |

According to a note in the accession file, this photograph is of the confirmation class of 1906 in Elk Horn. The donor is, Marie Madsen, is in the back row, tenth from the left. Donor History: The following was taken from the funeral program for the donor: Karen Marie (Madsen) Petersen was the daughter of Soren and Christine Wolf Madsen. She was born in Audubon County, Iowa on 15 December 1888 and died on 27 October 1984 in the Salem Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. She attended country schools in Audubon County and completed two years at Elk Horn College. She studied teaching and taught for three years. She then attended Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. After receiving her degree she taught in Exira, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Seattle, Washington. In 1921, she married Elmer E. Petersen and they farmed near Exira. After Elmer's death in 1955, she sold the farm and returned to teaching until her retirement. She was a member of the West Exira Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Exira. |
