Description |
Sepia tone photograph postcard of a group of nineteen men posing on a dock. The man on the far viewer right is standing, wearing a light-colored suit and hat and raising a flag or other object in his proper left hand. Another man in a darker colored suit and hat stands next to him, leaning on one of the poles of the dock. The rest of the men are grouped near the center, crouching or standing. They are all wearing suits of some sort and most wear hats. A few are smoking, and others carry luggage. The water behind them is open and there are buildings to either side as well as a hill in the distance. "jj" is printed in white in the lower right corner of the image. The photo has a white border, which is thicker on the right side. The back was written and sent as a postcard. The stamp is a 1-cent green one with the profile of a man in a helmet, "BALBOA 1513" printed beneath him. Stamped over it is "WORLD'S / PANAMA-PACIFIC / EXPOSITION / 1915". It is postmarked "SAN FANCISCO CAL / NOV 9 / 1 30 AM / 1915". The address is to "Mr. Th. Thrane / 1429 Rhode Island [D]r. / City." There are mathematical pencil scribblings sideways on the left side of the card. The message is mostly illegible, but the last part is "Hilsen fra/ [Jola] Jensen." |

Provenance |
These items were donated by Pastor Adolph Kloth and delivered to the museum by Arv Bollesen. The donor gave the photographs because he did not know who they were. He had received them from the estate of Mrs. Eva Thrane of Oakland, California. A note in the accession file says that Eva took back her family name after the breakup of her marriage and that her family were San Francisco Danes before she moved to the East Bay area. Eva was a "practical nurse." |
