This photograph shows a young women's gymnastics team outside the Danish Young People's Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota during 1915. Some of the women are identified. They include: Dagny Birkholm, Agethe Dodie Larsen, Agnes Birkholm, Mabel Sorensen, Hanna Haar, Marie Buck, Ceceilia Jacobsen, Augusta Paulsen, and Martha Kirkegaard. See description for details. ----------------------- Vilhelm Rasmus Larsen was born in 1887 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was interested in art from a young age. In 1907 at the age of 20, he immigrated to Jewell, Iowa. He later homesteaded in Florida, went to college, and became a physical education teacher. He taught in the Minneapolis Public School System for 40 years, and occasionally at the Institute of Arts. He coached high school athletic teams, and especially enjoyed track and hockey. One of his pieces is a large fountain carved in marble depicting pioneer life in Minnesota and the people who settled there. He was commissioned to do this and it stood in the Gateway in Minneapolis for years before being moved to the Rose Garden by Lake Harriet. His most outstanding work was a lifesized bust called "The Pioneer Woman." His model was his wife's grandmother, Rasmine, herself a pioneer in 1850. This piece was last known to be on display at the museum in Bone Lake, Wisconsin. In 1916, Vilhelm married Agnethe Cecelia Larsen (1896-1987), whose parents and grandparents were also immigrants. They had two children: Elna Marion and Godfrey Vilhelm ("Nick"). Larsen was a vital part of Camp Mishawaka, a summer camp for boys in northern Minnesota near Grand Rapids, for 34 years. He died on the shores of Lake Pokegama in 1967 where a flagpole is dedicated to his memory. |
