Photograph: The horizontally oriented, black and white portrait depicts the Hans Petersen family, consisting of one man, four women, and two boys in a photography studio. The two boys are sitting in the front row while the adults are standing in the back row. The man is standing second frame the viewer's left and has a white moustache and beard. He and the two boys are wearing suits and ties. The women are wearing long dresses with high collars. The photograph is printed on a piece of beige paper with a dark grey border around the edge. Frame: The photograph is held within a wooden frame faced with plaster. The sides and inner part of the front are painted silver. The outer edge of the front has a raised filigree design painted gold. On the back of the frame is a piece of brown pressed paper board held to the frame with nails. A piece of wire is strung between two eye screws on either side of the back of the frame. |

The photograph depicts the Hans Petersen family. Left to right are: Agnes (Inez), Hans (Father), Hilda (Mother), Anna (Fries), Richard, Evald. Hans Petersen was born on May 3, 1852 in Varde, Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1883 to teach in Elk Horn, Iowa. He taught- reading, writing, math and literature, Danish songs and fairy tales. His students were 8-18 years old. Later, Hans served as secretary and board member of the Danish Mutual Insurance Company for 46 years. He also served as a board member of Dana College and was the owner of Hans Petersen and Co. of Elk Horn, Iowa. Marie Hansen Petersen was born on May 2, 1861, in Frederica, Jutland, Denmark. She came to the United States for a visit in 1886 and decided to stay. Hans and Marie had five children: Anna, Hilda, Inez (also known as Agnes), Richard and Evald. Originally, Hans built a two-story house at Catalpa and Main streets in Elk Horn, Iowa. The family later moved across the street to (B.B. Place), he owned a grocery and general mercantile until retirement. Hans died 17 September 1939, preceded in death by his wife who died on August 11, 1932. |
