Description |
Tintype portrait of Mathilde Rasmussen, hand colored. She is wearing a dark top with a row of buttons down the front. There is a lace collar at her throat. She has brown hair that is parted in the middle and pulled into a bun at the back of her neck. Over her hair she is wearing a ruffled bonnet which ties in a bow under her chin. She has blue eyes. Her body is facing to the camera's right, and she is looking just to the right of the camera. The back of the tintype is covered in newsprint. The articles cover subjects from sports and horseracing to railroads to the Fourth of July. |

This photograph is of Mathilde Rasmussen from early in her life. The folk costume belonged to Danish immigrant Mathilde Rasmussen. It may be representative of the traditional clothing worn in Varde, Denmark. Mathilde was born in Varde, Denmark. She married at 20, but was widowed at 21 when her husband died from consumption. Mathilde immigrated to the U.S. circa 1904 or 1905. Mathilde settled primarily in Beverly, Massachusetts, working as a housekeeper for the ministers of St. John's Episcopal Church. Later in life, she moved in with Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Nagel. They had been her friends since her arrival in the U.S. Mathilde cared for donor Alan Nagel's family when Alan was a child. Mathilde was a life member of the Cove Improvement Society. She celebrated her 95th birthday in 1959. |
