Description |
Small black and white photograph of Captain Andrew Patterson and another man. They are standing on the deck of a ship in front of some stairs. Both men are dressed in dark navy uniforms. The uniforms consist of double breasted jackets with three stripes on their sleeves, white shirts and dark ties, and dark pants and shoes. The man on the left is wearing a white hat with a dark brim, and the man on the right has on a dark hat with a dark brim. They are standing in a corner on a ship. To the viewer's right is an open door. In the foreground is a pipe covered by some kind of material. On the back of the photo is written "Tall Man / Capt / Andrew Patterson / Grandpa". |

According to the back, the taller subject in this photograph is Captain Andrew Patterson. The grandfather of the donor, Andrew Patterson, was a sailor. He was either the captian or the 2nd officer of the West Cobalt. He was captain of the U.S. steamship Englewood when it struck a mine in 1919 in the Thames Estuary. The ship nearly sank. The donor's cousin, Anne Patterson Rodda, wrote a book on the family history entitled "Trespassing in Time: Family History as Microhistory: Navigating the Historical Records as Shown Through the Narrative of a Danish-American Seafarer’s Life" (In the genealogy collection as 2015-070). According to information from 2012.013, gifted by the Henry D. Patterson's son: Andrew was born Nov. 13, 1861 in Norre Vedby, Denmark to parents Peder Nicolaisen (b. ca. 1810, d. Nov. 16, 1874) and Maren Kirstine Rasmusdatter (b. March 8, 1823, d. Feb. 13, 1906). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1876 and became a U.S. citizen in 1892. On Oct. 22, 1893, he married Katarina Detjen (b. April 29, 1873 in Germany, imm. 1888, d. April 7, 1943) in Jersey City, NJ. She had emigrated from Elsdorf, Germany and the two met in the U.S. Andrew and Katharina had four children: Henry Andrew, Andrew, Walter Edward, and Rene Edwin. He died January 31, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a sea farer and joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and sailed for his career. During the First World War, Andrew was captain of the U.S. Navy freighter "Englewood." He retired as a Lt. Commander. Andrew's son Henry Andrew married Leona Wellenkamp and they had two sons: Henry D. and Albert. Henry D. later married Clair Zieger and they had two sons: Richard A. (the donor of 2012.013) and Thomas E. Richard later married Marion Fellows, and they have two children: son Daniel Henry and daughter Nancy Elizabeth. _______ Andrew Patterson is listed on the Wall of Honor. |
