Description |
Black and white studio photograph of a bride and groom. The man has on a large corsage on his proper left lapel. He is wearing a dark three-piece suit with at white bowtie. His hair is parted down the middle. The woman stands to the man's left and is wearing a white, high-necked, two-part wedding dress. There appears to be a bow at the bosom of the dress, and the bottom of the skirt has three decorative layers. The bride is wearing a small brooch at her neck. She is also wearing a floral headdress with a veil that goes all the way to the floor. She is holding a bouquet in her proper left hand. Behind the couple is a backdrop with a false curtain and flowers. The print is mounted on a gray cardboard mat with a decorative boarder. The back of the photo reads "Alfred Petersen married / 1884 Karen (Carrie) Jacobsensen", with the second "sen" crossed out. The post-it note seen on the back of the photo in the scanned picture has been moved to the accession file (2003.046). |

The wedding photograph shows Karen (Carrie) Jacobsen and Audoph (also spelled Audolph) Petersen on their wedding day, March 29, 1905. Karen and Audoph were the donor's grandparents. The wedding dress pictured is 2003.046.001.001 and 2003.046.001.002. ----------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY HISTORY: Karen (Carrie) Jacobsen married Audoph (also spelled Audolph) Petersen on March 29, 1905 at her parents home, the Anders Jacobsen farm near Elk Horn, with 150-200 people present. tents were set up in the yard and a large meal was served. The couple farmed in the Sharon Center area and had a home at the bend of the river. The couple had three children. Hans Elmer (b. 12/11/1905 d. 12/19/1905) was born premature and passed away shortly after birth. Maria Krestena (b. 1908 d. 8/7/1908) died due to drowning. The couple's third child, Marie Krestine, was born on October 29, 1908. While the couple was building a home across from the Kimballton park in 1909, Karen became ill with typhoid fever and had complications with a perforated bowel. She passed away. Marie Krestine was only 6 1/2 months old. She went to live with grandparents, Sidse and Anders Jacobsen. Audoph owned a furniture store in Kimballton and continued to farm as well. There is more information on Sidse and Anders Jacobsen in the accession file from pages that were copied from Elk Horn History Book. Sidse and Anders are both on the Museum's Wall of Honor. Marie married Herman Carl Christensen (b. 4-16-1907, Sibley, IL, d.II-27-81, Eureka IL) on Dec. 17, 1930 at Galesburg, IL. Marie met Herman when he came to husk corn for his uncle and aunt, Andrew and Mary Christensen Andersen, and stayed with his cousins, Hilda and Bertha Andersen. Marie was a neighbor girl. Marie was raised by her grandparents, Sidse and Anders Jacobsen, due to the death of her mother, when she was 6 1/2 months old. Herman and Marie were the parents of six children: Genevieve Ruth (Young Jensen) b. 1931; Lois Marie (Rhodes) b. 1933; Bonnie May (Dewey) b. ] 936; Betty Lou (Knapp) b. 1939; David Richard b. 1942; Julie (Swnmers) b. 1946.
