Photograph: The horizontally oriented, black and white photograph depicts the Welcome Celebration held for the Dagmar, Montana, community WWI soldiers in the summer of 1919. In the center of the image is a church with a decorated archway that has a sign which reads: "SOLDIERS WELCOME!" An American flag is flying over the arch and numerous men, women, and children are standing on either side of it. Behind the arch are standing approximately seventeen men in uniform. The photograph is matted on a piece of brown mat board that has a darker brown border around the photograph. Frame: The photograph is held within a wooden frame painted silver and black that has a carved floral motif. There is a piece of paper taped to the back of the frame that lists the men who served in WWI 1917-1918 from Dagmar, MT. The handwritten text on the paper reads: "Men served in 1st World War. 1917-1918 from Dagmar / Festival for Homecomming Sereice [sic] Men in Dagmar Church / in Summer 1919 / Oswald Andersen / Jens Lind / Carl Lind / Chris Kleis / Verner Jensen / Hjalmar Madsen-lightly wounded / Otto Jorgensen / Sohn B. The photograph was taken in the summer of 1919 and depicts the celebration held in honor of the soldiers from Dagmar, Montana, who served in WWI. Family History: Knud Christensen was born 1840 in Denmark. He married Karen Eriksen, who was born in 1849. They had Johanna in 1872, and she died at age 20. They had seven other children: Chris in 1875, Anna in 1877, Erik in 1880, Anton in 1882, Marie in 1886, Thomas in 1889, and Katrine in 1887. When Chris was baptized the name Sundsted was added and from then on all of Knud and Karen's children had the last name Sundsted. Chris immigrated to Racine, WI in 1901 and worked for the J.I. Case Company and later owned a grocery store. In 1902 Erik and Anton immigrated to Racine and eventually homesteaded nine miles northwest of Dagmar, MT in 1907. Marie came to Racine in 1904 and homesteaded in 1910 near Dagmar, MT. Thomas and Katrine came to Racine in 1906 and Katrine homesteaded in Dagmar in 1908. Anna visited America but never immigrated. Knud came to America in 1910 and died in 1911. His wife had died in 1898. |
