Description |
Black and white photograph of three people and a dog in a faux outdoor living room setting. There are fake trees and greenery around them, a rug on the steps and floor, and various footstools scattered around the area. The light-haired woman is seated on the viewer left; she is wearing a long dark gown with light-colored lace down the front of the bodice and at the cuffs. Standing next to her is a man in a dark outfit, a gray-toned brimmed hat, and a long bushy light-colored beard. There is a small table in front of them, draped with a cloth, and it has a metal vase on the top. Seated to the viewer right is a man in a dark suit with a light-colored collar and pocket square; he also has a watch chain. The shaggy-haired dog is laying on the rug in front of the small table. The photo is mounted on a cream-colored paperboard backing. Printed along the bottom is the studio information: "Dorge / [logo] / 1819 / RIVERSIDE AVE. / MINNEAPOLIS." Handwriting on the back at the top reads, "Santal Mission / Missionaries". |

Provenance |
This photograph is identified as picturing the Santal Mission missionaries. --------------- The Santal Mission in northern India was co-founded by Dane Hans Peter Børresen and Norwegian Lars Ole Skrefsrud in 1867. It was affiliated with the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church and largely supported by Danish-Americans. Jens Dixen (a Danish immigrant, preacher, missionary, and teacher) and Reverend L. Henningsen were very involved in promoting the mission in its early years. |
