Black and white photo of a family seated for a portrait with a faux background. The man (Niels Hansen) is on the viewer's left in a suit coat. On his lap is his daughter Caroline "Lena" who is in a long light-colored dress. On the viewer right is Sophia Hansen, who is wearing a darker dress, floor length with a layered skirt and fitted long sleeves. She is holding in her lap baby Andrew. He has on a long light-colored dress. Below the image is a line of repeating gold marks, and in the lower left is "Dammand," and in the lower right "Harlan, Iowa." Photo is mounted on cardstock or matteboard. It is white on back. On back is a good deal of handwritten information in blue, black, and red inks and pencil. In the upper left is "Niels A Hansen / Sophia Hansen / Andr (crossed out) / Caroline / Andrew". In the upper right is "89". At the bottom left is "Dallas Hansen / Ardel / Biography". This photo features Niels and Sophia (Jacobsen) Hansen with their first two children, Caroline "Lena" and Andrew. Andrew appears to be less than a year old (he was born in Dec. 1887). Ole was born about a year later. Hans Andersen Hansen and Niels Andersen Hansen, sons of Anders Hansen Johansen and Karoline (Caroline Coobs) Koobs, were brothers who emigrated from Denmark to Shelby County, Iowa and settled in the Jacksonville, Kimballton, and Harlan communities. Another brother and two sisters also immigrated though no information is available about them. Niels and Hans built a general store on south main street in Kimballton, but sold it about 1905 to Rasmus P. Larsen, and bought a farm in Jacksonville. Niels Andersen Hansen was born Dec. 28, 1859 in Visby, Tønder, Denmark. He immigrated in 1880 and married Sophia K. Jacobsen (b. May 8, 1865) on May 8, 1885 in Sharon Township, Audubon, IA. The two had three children. Niels was assistant postmaster in Kimballton, IA to Hans J. Jorgensen, founder of the town. In 1885, Niels purchased a farm, called the "homeplace," located northwest of Kimballton. In 1916 Niels built a house in Kimballton and retired from the farm. After Sophia died on Jan. 11, 1917, Niels returned to the farm to live with his son Ole J., and then moved to Harlan where he lived for more than 25 years with his daughter Lena. Niels died Jan. 14, 1949, and Sophia on Jan. 11, 1917. Hans Andersen Hansen was born March 12, 1849 in Døstrup, Tønder, Denmark. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1871 and married Christina (Kristina Luisa Heick) Hieck (b. 1859) on April 18, 1879 in Clinton, IA, USA. The two had six children. Hans died in 1938 in Harlan, IA. Niels Andersen Hansen is the donor's grandfather. Niels and Hans are on the Wall of Honor. __________________ Ole Hansen Jacobsen is also documented in these photos. His daughter Sophie married Niels Hansen (above). Ole's son Ole, Jr. started Crystal Springs Creamery in Kimballton and became a State Legislator. Ole Hansen Jacobsen (Sr.) was born Nov. 22, 1833 in Rise, Svendborg, Denmark to parents Christen Jacobsen and Gertrude Olesdatter. He married Sophie Cathrine Pedersen (b. 1835) on Feb. 19, 1858, in Rise, and they immigrated to the U.S. in 1869. The two had seven children. (FHGC research found that one child, Claus Pedersen Jacobsen was born in 1859, but died within a few months. On the 1880 census information, a "Chris Jacobsen" is listed as born in 1859. FHGC researchers feel that this child may have been an illegitimate child or "adopted" by the family since it would be impossible for both Chris and Claus to be born the same month and year if they were not twins.) In 1875, Ole (Sr.) and Sophie moved to the home in Kimballton, south and west of town and west of the brick yard. Ole died on his farm there on Nov. 1, 1916. His wife Sophie had passed away June 7, 1914. __________________ There are a few photos of the Mathiasen family who had a farm near Redline, IA. FHGC researchers indicated they had married into the Jacobsen family. |
