Black and white photograph of the Nysted Folk School's male gymnastics team posing on gymnastics equipment on the steps of a clapboard building. Chris B. Petersen, the instructor, is dressed in the light-colored outfit and doing a handstand on a balance beam. The other young men are dressed in dark-colored shirts with "NYSTED" across them and light-colored pants with dark belts. One is seated cross-legged in front of the beam - another two are on each end. There are three standing on the porch behind the beam. On the ground to the viewer right is a man doing an arched back-bend with another man standing on his chest. Slightly behind them is one young man standing on another's shoulders. The photo has a white border, and the studio mark is in the lower right corner of the mat: "A. Diercks / DANNEBROG, NEB". There is nothing written on the back. |

This photograph shows a gymnastics team at the Nysted Folk School in Nebraska. Chris B. Petersen was the gymnastics instructor after his family moved to Dannebrog, Nebraska in 1925. --------------- Christian Brun Petersen - Pedersen before immigrating - was born April 25, 1882 in Denmark. He came to the United States at the age of 18, about 1900-1901. He settled first in Woodstock, Illinois, where he worked in a creamery, as he had done in Denmark. Chris then moved to Exira, Iowa and worked as manager and butter-maker of the Exira Creamery until 1924. While there, he married Karen (Carrie) Jensen (b. 1895). In 1925, their family moved to the Danish community of Dannebrog, Nebraska. The Nysted Folk School was about four miles away and he taught gymnastics there. According to his daughter, Christian was the first to teach Swedish gymnastics in the United States. From 1936-1942, he owned the Albion Creamery Company. He died in 1958 and Carrie in the 1980's. Ellen (Petersen) Norskov was born in Exira, Iowa on May 2, 1918. When she was six years old, her family moved to Dannebrog. She met her future husband at the Nysted Folk School. After graduating high school, she worked in Albion, Nebraska as a switchboard operator from 1936-1940. On October 8, 1940, she married Arnold Leonard Norskov (1917-1993). They have five children: Mary Ellen Norskov, Cheryl (Terry) Twiestmeyer, Julie (Jack) Adkins, Tom (Mary) Norskov and Alida (Gary) Lamb. |
