Description |
Black and white photograph of one of the Jelling Stones in Denmark. The photograph shows the giant carved stone in the foreground outside with what appears to be a house and roof in the background to the viewer left and a tree to the viewer right. There were two labels formerly attached to the back are now in the accession file. The first reads: "CONSULATE GENERAL OF DENMARK / DANISH INFORMATION OFFICE / 280 Park Avenue New York, N.Y. 100017 / Address correction requested / Return postage guaranteed" inked over the top and a price list and "JELLING RUNIC STONE - DENMARK" faded beneath it. The second reads: "DENMARK/HISTORY [underlined] / The larger of the two Jelling stones North- / West of Vejle, East Jutland bears the in- / scription: / "King Harald caused these mounds to be / "raised to Gorm his father and to Thyra / "his mother; the Harald who won for him- / "self all Denmark and Norway and made the / "Danes Christians. / The language is Old Danish, not yet very / differentiated from Norwegian and Swedish. / The script is later Runic. The stone is / more than 1,000 years old. It is richly / ornamented and was doubtless coloured. The / carver may have been English. / (Harald Bluetooth, c. 985). / 100/24/06/66". There are four stamps on the back. The are three down the lower right side. The first reads: "Please return to / DANISH INFORMATION / OFFICE / 280 Park Avenue / New York, N. Y. 10017". The second in purpled ink, reads, "COPYRIGHT / ROYAL DANISH MINISTRY / FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS / Press Department / Copenhagen - Denmark". The third, in red, is: "COPYRIGHT / INGA AISTRUP FOTO / FREDENSVEJ 7, VEDBÆK, DENMARK". "SJ 761.1" is stamped to the left of the other red one. Handwriting along the top includes "RUNES", "D4", and "CH VII p. 70". |
