Description |
Black and white photograph of thirteen boys and girls of various ages wading and playing in a river. One of the children in the center is wearing a light-colored brimmed hat. The water is not very deep - is only comes up to the waist of most of the children, and the taller boy standing on the right side of the photo is only in water up to his shins. There is a bank on the far side with some sparse vegetation on it. The photograph has a white border. The back is dated "Aug. 25, 1921." The description reads: "Picnic in Gasnics grove. / wading in the river". |

The children of the Elim Children's Home are wading in the river at Gasnic's grove during their picnic. The items in this accession belonged to Raymond Nielsen and many relate to the Elim Children's Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. The Elk Horn Lutheran Church founded the Elim Children's Home and it opened its doors in September of 1890. Over the course of more than 70 years, over 300 children called Elim home. Included in its offerings were school education, farming and housekeeping experience, and religious guidance. It closed in September of 1961. |
