Two copied color photographs of Danish mill in Kenmare, N. D. (a)Danish windmill, red with white doorway and white vanes to which canvas sails are attached to regulate speed of grinding stones which weigh 1800 lbs. each. Red and white flowers are in the foreground with trees in the background. Photo is 4 3/4" X 3 1/2". (b)Sign with information about the Mill is "Danish Mill, Built in 1902, 11 miles north of Kenmare by Christian C. Jensen, Danish immigrant. The mill was in daily operation until 1918 Gears are hand-hewn maple. Canvas sails attached to vanes regulate speed of grinding stones which weigh 1800-lbs. each. Capacity was 200 sacks per day. Restored in 1959." Photo is 4 3/4" X 3 1/2". Windmill was constructed by a Danish pioneer, Christian C. Jensen. "The coneshaped mill is overlaid with wooden shingles and has a rounded top which can be revolved to face the vanes into the changing winds. The four large vanes are 18 feet long and attached to the 15-inch diameter center shaft which transfer the power to drive the large millstones to grind the grain. The mill was purchased by the Kenmare Association of Commerce in the fall of 1958 and moved into Kenmare and placed on a site which was deeded to the North Dakota State Historical Society. |
