Description |
Photograph: The vertically oriented, black and white photograph depicts a church with a steeple, Gothic shaped windows, and horizontal, light colored siding. It is viewed at an angle so that the front side and proper right side are visible. A few stairs lead up to the front door. There are a few tress in front of and behind the building. Frame: The photograph is held within a wooden frame with glass across the front. The sides and inner edge of the front are painted silver. The concave portion of the front is painted modeled silver. A piece of pressed paper board on the back is held to the frame with nails. That paper is faced with a shiny piece of paper, the upper half of which has a printed area of swirled green and orange/pink. Handwritten below the center of that paper is: "Hope Church / Ruthton / started by / H. J. P." A piece of wire is strung between two eye screws on either side of the back of the frame. |

The photograph depicts Hope Lutheran Church in Ruthton, Minnesota, which was founded by Hans Jorgen (H. J.) Pedersen. The donor, Allegra Stehr, is the granddaughter of H. J. Pedersen; the daughter of his son Sigurd. Hans Jorgen Pedersen was born December 28, 1851, near Ringe, Fyn, Denmark. At the age of twenty-four, he came to the United States. In October of 1875 he was ordained to the churches in Gowen and Omegn, MI. He was there for five years, and then went to Elk Horn, IA for two; Ashland High School as the master and preacher in the church for six years; and then in the spring of 1888 the family arrived in Tyler, MN. Here he began Danebod school, serving as headmaster for five years, and then continuing to teach. He planned the cross church and was the preacher until the fall of 1903 when they moved to Ruthton. His last sermon was New Years Day 1905. He passed away from cancer on July 20, 1905. |
