Description |
Black and white photograph of a group of children and two women joining hands and walking in a ring around five children at the center. The children in the center have their hands clasped together over their heads. THere are a few other children looking on. There are three dark barracks-like structures with light-colored window trim in the background. The photo has a white border. There is a typed label attached upside down to the back of the photo. It reads: "The German occupation authorities - in contravention of / international law - forced upon Denmark 210,000 German refugees, / whom they billeted in schools, hotels, etc. After the peace the / Danish State built a number of barrack camps for these very unwelcome / "guests", until such time as they can again be received in their / homeland, which isabig and unsolved problem. One of the camps with / 17,000 refugees is situated on the outskirts of Copenhagen. There / are about 5,500 children. The picture shows a kindergarten playing in the open air." [as is] There are also three stamps on the back side of the photograph. The first stamp, in black ink, is in the upper left corner. It reads, "Please return to / DANISH INFORMATION / OFFICE / 280 Park Avenue / New York, N. Y. 10017". "P.3095" is handwritten next to it in dark blue ink; the number is crossed out and "3294" is below it in bright blue. The second stamp, in black ink, is located in the top/center of the photograph. The stamp reads, "DANISH INFORMATION OFFICE / 15 Moore Street.....4, N.Y." The third stamp is in the bottom right corner is also in black ink and reads, "COPPER / Flush Bottom." |

This photograph belonged to and was donated by the Royal Danish Embassy. It shows a kindergarten class of German refugees playing in a camp on the outskirts of Copenhagen. The identification on the back says that during the German occupation, the German authorities forced 210,000 German refugees into Denmark. After the end of the war, the Danish government built "barrack camps for these very unwelcome 'guests', until such time as they can again be received in their homeland...." The camp in the picture hosted 17,000 people, 5,500 of them children. |
